Under Cloud Cover: The 'Processes for Organization Meanings' Model, Dialectics and the Battle of Britain

This paper analyses the historical account of the Battle of Britain given in Checkland and Holwell [1], contrasting it with a more adequate history, given the explanatory goals which they have set for themselves. Subsequently, concepts from dialectics are applied to show how and why the differences between the two accounts reflect different methods of conceptualisation, focussing on the nature of processes of abstraction and the bounding of problems and systems in understanding the impact of information systems. In this light, we point to similarities and differences between the two meta-frameworks used: SSM and materialist dialectics.
